It was great to see so many of you at Bruce Castle for the Haringey History Fair 2022 in the glorious sunshine this past weekend – and to welcome new visitors too.
For those that missed the Fair, here’s a little taster – our photograph of Jim Pennington who was kindly demonstrating the art of printing on the once-ubiquitous Gestetner duplicating machine, made in Tottenham.
Thank you so much to all our speakers, helpers, volunteers and heritage and arts organisations who all took part and supported the event – without you the History Fair just could not happen!
And what to look forward to next …. our special event for families is coming up this weekend:
The Story of Me: Family Workshop
- Sunday 22 May, 1.30 – 4pm
Come along to Bruce Castle for a colourful special event and get hands-on and creative in our free workshop.
You can help artist Dominika Lipniewska by contributing your ideas and drawings to our ‘IDENTITY’ project.
Have fun creating different types of self-portraits with Dominika and tell us about your likes, talents, favourite things you like to do and quirks that make you unique. Your drawings and thoughts will inspire the designs for a story-telling chair to collect stories for the Hi CULTURE! project.
All ages and abilities welcome!
Dominika Lipniewska is an independent illustrator, author and designer from Poland who works from her studio in Tottenham. Her work, heavily inspired by people she comes across every day, has landed her commissions with numerous international institutions and publishers like Tate, Munch Museum and Financial Times.
Munch and Listen …. our monthly lunchtime talk is happening on Monday next week. No need to book – just bring your lunch and listen!
Monumental Restorations, 1950s-style
- Monday 23 May, 12.15pm (Doors open 12 noon)

Back in 1952, Tottenham’s iconic High Cross was leaning. Drastic intervention was required to help the monument’s perilous position.
Deborah Hedgecock, Curator of Bruce Castle Museum, will share beautiful pictures from the collections of Bruce Castle about the history of this elegant ancient monument standing proudly on the High Road for centuries – and its successful restoration that year. She will also showcase other ‘temporary restorations’ of traditions and stories happening in Tottenham that year.
Intrigued? Come and along and find out!
In person talk only. No need to book.
The Reminiscence Café at the Castle is also on next week with ….
Do You Remember 1952?
- Tuesday 24 May, 2 – 4pm
From the collections and © Bruce Castle Museum & Archive
The country was still recovering from the devastating effects of the War and the death of the King. There were lots in stories in the news that year. And also something to look forward to in 1953 – the Coronation of the new and very young Queen. We planned street parties and holidays, bought celebration mugs and plates: fun for the children and some light relief for exhausted parents.
If 1952 is too far back for you to remember, there are the more recent memories of the 1977 Jubilee year commemorating 25 years of the Queen on the throne – and more street parties. There will doubtless be bigger and brasher celebrations of 70 years on the throne this year, but doubtless the old ones were best. Bring along your pictures, mugs and memories, and enjoy a comparable selection from the Museum archives.
And if you are interested in joining some walks by Tottenham Heritage Walks as part of the Jubilee events programme here at Bruce Castle, please check out our listings on our new website – and just follow the links to make your booking: https://www.brucecastle.org/whats-on/talks/walks
Our next update will follow very soon with additional events for half term and what’s on in June.
Hope to see you soon at Bruce Castle
Best wishes
From us all at Bruce Castle
