Summer has absolutely flown by and it’s already back to school season! Check out the above image of students from Tottenham Grammar School doing what looks like titrations in the science lab (from the collections and © Bruce Castle Museum and Archive).

Read on for a reminder of Open House events in and around Bruce Castle, plus an upcoming heritage walk and some news from Tottenham Clouds.

Open House 2024

Open House 2024 Bruce Castle Heritage Quarter

When: Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September, 1pm to 5pm

Free, all welcome. No booking required.

A cafe with tea and cake will be open in the Old Kitchen on both days.

Saturday 21 September

Guided tours around Bruce Castle and the Tudor Tower

  • Every half an hour from 1pm to 4pm. 25 people maximum per tour.

Join curator-led tours and discover 1000 years of history of Bruce Castle, from manor house to museum.

Meet the Architect

  • Drop-in sessions at 1pm, 2.15pm and 3.30pm. 12 people maximum per tour.

Meet the architects from Clive Graham Associates, Haringey Council and Rodney Melville Partnership as they explain the MEND restoration works at Bruce Castle.

Activities for Elders: Age Well Festival

  • Drop-in, 12 noon to 4pm

Taking place on the lawns outside the front entrance to Bruce Castle. Visit the Age Well Festival webpage for more information.

All Hallows Church and Priory Gardens

  • Drop-in, 2pm to 5pm

See inside the oldest building in Tottenham and enjoy a rare opportunity to visit the tranquil gardens of the Priory, a Jacobean farmhouse next door to All Hallows.

Tottenham Tales Walk

  • 11am to 1pm, booking required

Join Carol Hebbs on a special guided walk following the ‘Tottenham Tales’ trail. This walk is currently fully booked but you may be able to join a waiting list by clicking the link below.

Join local Artist Rebecca Chitty (Product of Your Environment) who will be here working with families to create a ‘wall of bricks’! Get crafty and be inspired by five centuries of brick-making for the historic building of Bruce Castle.

You can also tell us what you would like to see in the future at our mysterious Tudor Tower – from ghostly storytelling to escape rooms!

From Mansions to Monuments: Tottenham Park and Cemetery, A Heritage Walk

From Mansions to Monuments Tottenham Park and Cemetery, A Heritage Walk

When: Monday 30 September, 11am to 12.30pm

Free, all welcome. Booking required.

Join Val Crosby of Bruce Castle for a guided tour exploring some of Tottenham’s hidden heritage.

On this walk you will visit part of Tottenham Cemetery to look at the historic site of the mansion of Tottenham Park, sometimes called the Moated House, and the charming and unusual Montagu Cottage. Learn about the residents, the buildings and what stood there long before the mansion was built.

Meet: By All Hallows Church, Church Lane, N17 7AA at 10.45am for an 11am start.

Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate shoes for walking.

Exhibitions

We are pleased to say that our current Old Kitchen Gallery exhibition – ‘John Godden’s Art’ – has been extended until 24 November 2024.

Plus, on selected weekends in October you will be able to visit a new exhibition in The Tower – ‘Here I am’ – by artist Helen Currie, with words by Samuel Davey-Newton and Zippy Hawkes.

News from Tottenham Clouds

Friday 13 September: Cloud Appreciation Day

Tottenham Flower and Produce Festival

Our friends over at Tottenham Clouds are getting ready for some upcoming cloud-tastic events!

This year’s Cloud Appreciation Day will take place on Friday 13 September. For 24 hours only you will be able to add a cloud from wherever you are in the world to the 2024 Memory Cloud Atlas.

Tottenham Clouds will also be taking part in the Tottenham Flower and Produce Festival on Saturday 14 September! This is a day to celebrate sustainability and a love of nature, all taking place in Lordship Rec – the world’s first Cloud Appreciation Park.
