London, Thursday 13 October, 2022; Tottenham Hotspur has joined forces with Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), Britain’s leading theatre company, to bring world-class theatre engagement to young people in the London Borough of Haringey.
West End in Tottenham offers a series of workshops to young people aged 11-18 years old to celebrate London’s arts and culture and put the voices of N17 centre stage.
From performer workshops to theatre trips, to beatboxing and breaking a sweat, there is something for everyone during the sessions that will take place after school at the London Academy of Excellence – a state funded Sixth Form, sponsored by Tottenham Hotspur and Highgate School, based on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium campus.
The programme forms part of the Club’s continued drive to provide life-changing opportunities for young people in Tottenham, creating a sport and leisure destination around its new stadium and embracing the arts and culture.
West End in Tottenham offers:
- Performer Workshops – for ages 13-18 years old, designed to ignite participants’ imagination and build confidence in their performance ability and stage presence, led by a West End practitioner
- Physicality and Movement Workshops – for ages 12-15 and 16-18 years old, introducing participants to the basics of movement, showing them how to use their bodies and develop physical skills to challenge and re-imagine what theatre and live performance is about
- Beatbox and Hip Hop Theatre Workshops – for ages 11-15 and 16-18 years old, this workshop is led by Conrad Murray – theatre-maker, writer, director, rapper, beatboxer, and singer. The workshop uses Conrad’s own musical and theatrical devising practice to help participants create new forms of performance and theatre
- Interval workshops – for ages 14-18 years old, targeted at those who traditionally engage in sports but may face barriers in gaining regular access to physical activity, using ensemble and cardio-based exercises, whilst blending theatre techniques such as voice and breath
London’s West End presents some of the world’s most celebrated theatre productions – only half an hour away from Tottenham. Young people who take part in any of the West End in Tottenham workshops are invited, along with their families, to discover some of the best shows in London as part of the programme.
Donna-Maria Cullen, Executive Director, Tottenham Hotspur, said: “We know that the wealth of talent that exists amongst young people on our doorstep extends far beyond sport – this is why partnering with ATG to bring the West End to Tottenham has the potential to be transformational.
“Some of the world’s biggest theatre productions take place just half an hour away from N17, yet dreams of one day being on the stage can seem so distant for young people in our neighbourhood.
“West End In Tottenham can change that and open the eyes of Tottenham teenagers to the world of performing arts through a series of engaging and inspiring workshops, held right here on our stadium campus.”
ATG’s Creative Learning programme forms part of the theatre company’s commitment to delivering excellence in all aspects of community and educational engagement. Teams are located across UK regional venues and in the heart of the West End, delivering award-winning activities and experiences.
Conor Hunt, Creative Learning Producer (West End), ATG said: ‘‘Creative Learning at the Ambassador Theatre Group are thrilled to be working with Tottenham Hotspur on the West End in Tottenham programme.
“The programme offers a series of workshops, ranging from beatboxing to Hip Hop theatre; supporting young people across Haringey to discover, create, and take part in live performances.
“We are committed to nurturing the next generation of artists and creators to see theatre as a space for them – bringing our West End expertise to the local community of Tottenham.”
