London, UK — Bruce Castle Museum & Archive has announced a programme of heritage events and community activities taking place across September, including historical tours, archive sessions, a reminiscence café and a walking tour exploring the history of North Tottenham.

The programme follows a summer project that brought young people from Haringey Shed, Greig City Academy and St Thomas More School to the Houses of Parliament as part of the Joyce Butler Project. The visit included an exhibition about the political career of Joyce Butler MP and her work on women’s rights, peace, housing, consumer and patient rights, alongside a question-and-answer session with MPs Catherine West and Bambos Charalambous.

The museum’s September programme began with its participation in the Open House Festival on 13 September. Visitors were able to take part in free curator-led historical tours, visit a temporary exhibition by the Crouch End Sketchers and follow the Mystery Manor Trail, designed for families with children aged five to 10.

A one-day pop-up exhibition in the museum’s Tower also featured work by young filmmakers from Kids Art & Film Camp. For the first time, Bruce Castle also offered two British Sign Language (BSL) Deaf-led tours of the museum and Tudor Tower.

The programme continues on 15 September with the museum’s Reminiscence Café, themed “Television: The Golden Days.” Running from 2pm to 4pm, the free session will invite visitors to share memories of television during the 1950s and 1960s, including programmes broadcast from Alexandra Palace.

On 20 September, local historian Oona Kelly will lead “Pubs Through Time,” a free walking tour exploring the history of North Tottenham’s coaching inns. The two-hour walk will follow the historic route along Tottenham High Road, looking at pubs and inns, the families who ran them and their wider social role in the local community.

Bruce Castle will also take part in Haringey Age Well Week, running from 21 to 25 September. On 24 September, visitors will have an opportunity to explore original material from the Joyce Butler Archive and share memories of life in Haringey during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

Another event on 24 September, “Sensing a Place,” will offer people living with dementia and their carers the opportunity to explore museum collections and share memories around a “Back to School” theme. The session is free and includes refreshments.

The museum’s programme continues into October with a Curator’s Pick event on 1 October focusing on British illustrator William Heath Robinson. Chris Westbrook, curator of the Heath Robinson Museum, will discuss the artist’s life and work alongside the exhibition William Heath Robinson: Unseen.

The exhibition includes original prints and drawings from Bruce Castle Museum & Archive, as well as previously undocumented works, including artworks from the King’s Collection at Windsor and Shakespeare illustrations that had been privately held since 1921.

Bruce Castle Museum & Archive, housed in a historic 16th-century manor house in Tottenham, holds the archives of the London Borough of Haringey and collections documenting the area’s local history and heritage.
